, this time of year, they can cost you big time as well. christie smith is live in oakland with that warning about fireworks. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. yeah, firefighters and police are talking about a couple of things, one is that it's going to be hot and dry this fourth of july which means higher than normal fire danger to keep in mind if you're using fireworks. around the bay area in cities and counties it's a mixed bag where you can and can't use safe and sane fireworks. we're standing at one of the fire stations where they have collection bins to get illegal fireworks off the streets. if you are caught with fireworks you can be fined up to $1,000 in the city, police and fire will be patrolling looking for people setting them off. we have youtube video of what not to do. there was someone shooting fireworks toward a b.a.r.t. train, possessing large quantities of fireworks could get you jail time, and fines of up to 5,000 to $10,000. there's also the danger factor involved with burns, even losing limbs, last year according to one consumer group about 8,600 people lan

. he said he saw two faces and two big sets of eyes. the two men on board were killed. it happened at 7:30 last night. plane crashed into a medical office building narrowly missing the main hospital building here at the watsonville community hospital. >>> the blilgs department but no one was there except for the people that were actually on the plane. >> reporter: here a close-up shot. faa will be on scene to take a close look at the crash scene but no cause has been identified yet. witnesses say it was foggy at the time. the plane had just taken off from the watsonville municipal airport. it's registered under two men but names were not released. hospital was not affected by the crash so hospital workers were able to continue caring for their patients. >>> this morning, survivors of a capsized fishing boat in mexico are expected back home in the bay area. at the same time family members of the seven men still missing are hoping they will have a reuin yoon in the near future. nick smith joins us. >> it's been tough for the families. 16 of the remaining 19 american survivors have crossed

some big financial problems. the agency says it lost $8 billion last year. part of it is because of the recession, there has been a steep decline in advertising mail but there's also a lot of first class mail that is now being sent electronically and packages are being carried bid private carriers. the postal service says it will consider opening village offices. postoffice desks and counters that would be placed inside businesses, town halls and community centers. postal service is expected to -- across the country for possible closure. we don't know yet which bay area postoffices may be on that list or how many of them. but about 10 minutes ago i did get a response from a u.s. postal service spokesperson in washington, d.c. she said at 10:30 eastern time they're going to be sending out that list of the 3,600 postoffices. so 10:30 eastern time so about an hour and a half from now for our pacific time. we should get that list and take a look at it to see how this is going to affect postal service here in the bay area. allie rasmus. >>> time now 6:08. the stand off in washington i

freeway was shut down for more than two hours. parts of 237 came to a standstill. a deadly big rig crashed in sunnyvale killing the driver. 237 at matilda. crews are just nownt getting th vehicle off the road. this is in the heart of the silicon valley bringing in kris sanchez who's been tracking the story. what exactly happened? seems like the lanes are wide open, at least going in one direction? >> reporter: aat least going in one direction is right. westbound lane are all completely open. we're just seeing the last of the clean-up from that big rig crash here on the lanes that were headed eastbound. these eastbound lanes is where that big rig driver was driving when witnesses say it looked like he had a blowout, lost control of the vehicle, crashed into the center divide, which then projected part of the vehicle into the other lanes of traffic going in the other direction. that really complicated the clean-up and putting out the fire, which also erupted as well. now, there was one person in the cab of that truck. though when investigators first arrived here, the chp couldn't tell whethe

a big clean up to do. a fire broke out at daly city's skyline elementary school on christian avenue. this happened about 11:30 last night. just look at the pictures. the portable classroom went up in flames. the damage includes the building itself, everything inside, books, chairs, audio- visual equipment. took firefighters about 15 minutes to put it out. authorities don't know what started the fire but it apparently started outside of the portable building. no word of any injuries and students by the way return to school on august 17th. >>> meantime firefighters say an overnight house fire in san francisco caused about $350,000 damage. this fire started just before 2:30 this morning at a home on melrose avenue. the flames then spread to a second house. took firefighters about 20 minutes to contain that one alarm fire. no injuries have been reported. authorities think the fire started in the living room of the first house, but the cause of the fire is still under investigation. >>> the book written by kidnap victim jaycee dugard does not go on sale for another day but it is already

warmer inland on the weekend but not a big jump up. temperatures i think will just recover and get back into the 80s. by the coast i still think 50s and 60s. system moved into the pacific northwest actually settled into oregon and the southern end of that has just been sweeping in low clouds. you can see how they bank up. they'll be a decrease in the low cloud deck because it's getting so cool aloft and also the inland temperatures have been plunging there's really not a lot to support it but it's still there. and every wind direction is almost out of the west or southwest. the delta breeze howling all the way to sacramento. two 60s, san jose and san jose state. but upper 50s and mid-50s. that system continues to carve itself out right out of the portland. for this time of year that's an extremely impressive system to make it that far and have this much of an impact. low overcast drizzle fog temperatures held in check cool for july no doubt about that. today, tomorrow bottom out and then a slight increase friday as we head into the weekend. still lots of 70s in areas that should be uppe

. the roof started burning at 11:10 at alcatraz and king streets. it was an enormous fire. big flames coming out of that roof. it's too early to stay whether fireworks were to blame. check out these images from over in brentwood, two homes caught fire. firefighters think it was the barbecue grill, no one was hurt. the victims from one of homes had only been there about three weeks had just moved in. they had unfortunately been through this before. >> very scary. we were able to get out in time. we know the neighbors were able to help us. it was a second fire we've had. so it burned down and the fire department responded really fast >> reporter: just incredible. now check out what they were dealing with out in the county. east contra costa county, lots of grass fires, half a dozen. the skies lit up with illegal fireworks so a lot of them on the ground there were a lost fires. this is in bay point. no injuries were reported from these fires and no structures were burned but again, firefighters say it's too early whether fireworks was to blame but it would be quite a coincidence that it just ha

looks good getting up to highway 18. at 5:08 let's go to steve. >> another big fog bank out there and it's giving us also some drizzle so we have to deal with that. today will be very similar to what we had over the weekend. breezy to windy at times, already gusts to 30. about the same tomorrow, by the end of the week looks like that fog will be getting a little shallower, it does look warmer 80s and 90s coming back for us in the sacramento san joaquin valley. we keep dealing with a low coming in from the pacific west, that ramps up the fog. then high pressure in the middle of country tries to head back west but it's been trying to do that for the last two months. we have some fog in the coast, but it has no problem getting back out. everybody coast and inland 80 degrees. west south wind or a west wind when it's 27 at travis and southwest at vacaville. any time they get a south wind in this kind of a pattern that's a cool breeze. once the low kicks out, temperatures will gradually start to come up. it's a gradual the warm warm up. breezy to windy and that will be out of the west. drizzl

in downtown oakland at fifth. in the midst of what is like, like traffic there's a report that there's a big rig that maybe one aside blocking lanes of freeway. not even with that, the chp has said it will not lift the restriction for big rigs on i-580 because they do not expect even with the lanes blocked that there will be a major delay on the nimitz north bound. again, the traffic loads are so like, and the details are little sketchy. if we do not know how many lanes are blocked, but the first report indicates that some lanes will be blocked what the big rig reported on its side on the nimitz freeway north bound through downtown oakland. presently you can see with green showing on the road centers, there is no back up. from here will get a quick bridge to check up, expect a like condition that the bay bridge. that is exactly what we have, for the san mateo bridge is problem free. this almost like the east bound direction in fact in a little lighter than on a normal day. your ride to the golden gate bridge only three lanes are available in the southbound direction. they're holding three on

towards concord past pleasant hill on 680 southbound and nearly to highway 4 on 242 southbound. big delays in both directions. there is no indication on when planes will be cleared. when the chp issues alert the believe planes will be blocked for 30 or more minutes. this accident is about 30 minutes old now. our other hot spot is a westbound on the bay bridge. traffic is nearly at a standstill. the back of this to the end of the macarthur maze and even the the the approach is battling back up. bear in mind that one hour ago there was no back up on the bay bridge toll plaza. when other bridges are not doing too badly. the golden gate bridge looks to be a good. although it is under fog when southbound. despite the fog it appears that we will have another sunny and warm day ahead. >> here is the view from our roof camera showing you the fog and also sunshine as well. temperatures in the '50s and '60s. the sun will come out this afternoon, mostly sunny and warm with inland spots getting into the low-mid-90s. we're going to continue cooling as we head towards the weekend. let's talk more about
